Muskingum County Democrat Club Memorial Scholarship
The Muskingum County Democrat Club is pleased to announce a 2024 graduate of Zanesville High School is the winner of our Democrat Club Memorial Scholarship.
This scholarship was given originally in memory of Brenda A. Anderson, a Muskingum County native who embodied many of the qualities this scholarship hopes to reward. She passed away in the summer of 2005 at the age of 23, shortly after she earned a master’s degree from Kent State University. She found time to actively support her belief in the individual rights guaranteed by the Constitution by never missing her chance to vote and by being involved in social causes. Since then, many local and proud Democrats have passed away, so we honor their memory through this scholarship.
The scholarship is given to encourage young people to think about the importance of voting. Most of this year’s graduates will be eligible to vote in the November election, so we encourage you to register to vote either online or by visiting your local board of elections office. It is the most effective way to participate in democracy and make your voice heard. The Democrat Club Memorial Scholarship also seeks applicants who are planning a career in public service, so we challenge the graduates to find ways to give back to your community in the years ahead.
This year’s winner has made tremendous strides in his academics from his freshman year to now. He noted that he was most proud of the progress his school’s drama club made in its growth over the last four years, but this individual has also been tremendously involved in his community. In his essay, he wrote, “In my experience with young voters, we are very idealistic, we strongly believe in progressive issues. The problem comes when we feel like we are being ignored.” He has been very passionate about making sure the voice of the youth has been heard in recent years and he was an advocate for the state issues that were on the 2023 ballot. We are very confident that this young man will no doubt continue to raise up the voices of upcoming voters and make sure they are not ignored in future elections. He is a standout among his peers, and we are extremely proud to know him.
